Petroglyph discovered that the Steam API for integrating multiplayer for Star Wars: Empire at War and its expansion worked well with the original source code of the game. They then went to Disney and asked for their permission to release a multiplayer patch, which they approved. This patch was released on September 1st, 2017, and allowed owners of the Steam copy of the game to once again utilize the online servers that were shut down in 2014, when Gamespy was shutdown.
The solution is quite simple. Owners of the original game would like to be able to redeem their original CD key for a Steam key. Otherwise, owners of the original game are either forced to buy a game that they already bought at full price years ago, or to not play multiplayer at all.
