It is important to understand that the LGBTQ community is not any different from any other community in the world. Similarly how our country symbolizes the search for freedom and inalienable rights, people within the LGBTQ community should also have inalienable rights to express themselves in any shape or form, just how any other person can do so. In spite of having these ideal statements in our country, many people have the audacity to deny the existence of people within the LGBTQ community and discriminate them. There are various unacceptable way in which the LGBTQ community is being discrminitated and alienated, specifically through media. It is atypical to see gay, lesbian, or transgender people being represented on the media. It is rare to see news outlets, T.V. shows, and other media sources exposing the significance of the LGBTQ community to its viewers, and bring awareness. It is rare to see people from the LGBTQ community to be given a major role in the entertainment industry.

Everyday, the LGBTQ movement is getting larger and larger. There are TV shows taht feature the LGBTQ community. An example would be TV show called Pose on FX, which features five transgender actors. Another example of such growth would be Disney’s Andi Mark, who came out with a gay character. These are really good achievements but more effort has to be put in into making a difference. As of 2016, only 18.4% of the top 125 films, include LGBTQ characters. Just portraying a gay character is not sufficient in order to make a great change in our society.

We desire for there to be more representation of the LGBTQ community on media in order to bring awareness and enlighten the people. It is crucial for a transformation or a change to be made starting with how media manipulates their information. Social media is a great stepping stone into making significant changes because people, especially younger generations would be able to understand and learn about the LGBTQ community. Exposing viewers to the LGBTQ community and what it really means, will ultimately help younger people because they will feel empowered knowing that the LGBTQ community was able to broach the stereotypes within the entertainment industry and other media sources. For these reasons, it is important for there to be more LGBTQ representation on different media outlets.
