Oak Park, Illinois is a community that has reached a high level of diversity. More than ever, Oak Park must purposefully engage, celebrate, and support its diversity. As Oak Park aims to be progressive, the community must offer more than a diverse population, clean streets, and low crime rates. By fostering connectedness, empathy, unity, and collaboration, Oak Park becomes a community that not only values every resident’s physical state, but emotional as well.
To this aim, I petition the Village of Oak Park to no longer recognize Christopher Columbus Day, which pays homage to a xenophobe, renaming it Indigenous Peoples Day. Numerous Oak Park leaders have delivered statements identifying Oak Park, Il as a sanctuary of diversity. If true, Oak Park, Illinois can no longer recognize a holiday named after an individual that represents opposition to this ideology. Instead, as a community, let’s celebrate a holiday that honors diversity.
