We, the undersigned, petition the Vice Chancellor and procurement staff of the University of Manchester to sign up to the Worker Rights Consortium. Each year UK Universities spend £8billion on the things that students use every day and by joining the WRC we can ensure that all university products are purchased in a transparent way and under a fair code of conduct. This will guarantee that garments are not produced in sweatshops where Worker's job rights and safety are deemed less important than profit.
The WRC allows workers to unionise and to submit independent complaints so that poor working conditions and safety standards can be upheld by the factory staff rather than managers with clipboards. Manufacturers can be held to account and the WRC has already stopped numerous human rights abuses across the world. We want to prevent a disaster like the Dhaka garment factory fire happening again (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Dhaka_fire)
