Supporting natural menstruation alternatives to save environment

Much has been spoken about environmental damage caused by various human activities - including toxic substances, pollution, chemicals, population explosion, carbon emissions, etc. Hardly does anyone speak about the damage done to earth by non-biodegradable sanitary napkins disposed off in landfills and left to decompose. According to the World Bank, women make 50% of the world's population.

Certain hard-hitting facts:

1. A 2015 study by BMJ Publishing Group, an average Indian woman produces approximately 9000 tonnes of menstrual garbage in a year,  using approx 500 sanitary napkins annually; and 15000+ during her reproductive lifetime. Each sanitary napkin not only contains cancer causing dioxins, but also emits dioxins when burning, when disposed off as dry waste as per government norms.
Each pad is equivalent to 4 plastic papers. Can you imagine what kind of damage we are doing to our environment?

And, here's the shocker - non-biodegradable pads take over 500 years to decompose!!
2. According to the newly revised Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016 by the Government of India, used sanitary waste should be wrapped securely in pouches provided by manufacturers or brand owners of these products or in a suitable wrapping material and placed in the bin meant for dry waste / non- bio-degradable waste. Dry waste is disposed off by burning and burning menstrual garbage results in further emission of dioxins.
We all know that regular sanitary napkins are not only made of plastic (base and top layer), but also come wrapped each in flimsy plastic cover - much against the rules specified by the government.

3. Having said this, we would like to make a petition to the urban women of India to adopt natural alternatives of menstruation hygiene, such as cloth pads, natural napkins and/or menstrual cup.

Under the #greenperiodcleanperiod campaign, we plan to get as many women as possible aware about eco menstrual hygiene through myecoperiodkit. Our kit is a unique kit containing items from sanitary napkins to menstrual cups, covering major natural alternatives.

Our aim is to spread awareness about the harmful effects of regular non biofriendly napkins and urge women to think on their own - should they be part of huge damage to earth, or a proud citizen who makes the ‘green’ choice when it comes to banishing red during their periods.
