Tanner Hudson started this petition to The University of Texas at Austin School of Theatre & Dance

In the UT Austin Theatre & Dance, students are encouraged to get paid for their work. The phrase “pay artists for their work” has been heralded as a cornerstone for the department’s ethical standards.

However, Theatre & Dance students are required to take an upper-division course called Advanced Production Laboratory (TD 124P, 224P, 324P). This course requires students to engage in physical labor to set up and strike for productions taking place in the Oscar G. Brockett Theater, The B. Iden Payne Theater, the McCullough Theater, The Laboratory Theater, and more, for NO PAY and at NO COST for The School of Theatre & Dance. In fact, like every other course, students must pay full tuition costs for this class. Additionally, students only receive course credit hours for a fraction of the time that they are actually working (i.e. 3 hrs credit for 9 hrs of labor). This is NOT “paying artists for their work.” This is free labor.

Join us to put a stop to students paying to do free labor in The University of Texas at Austin School of Theatre & Dance. Help students receive compensation for the hours of labor that they engage in, and the hours of labor that aren’t accounted for, by signing this petition! We will make change.
