Dear Prof Lamberts,

We are deeply disappointed with the government response to contain/delay the Coronavirus pandemic. With the virus spreading domestically in the UK, the ban on international travel may have limited effect at this stage. Although the virus is unknown to the world, we know some people infected can become severely ill and need hospital treatment.

There are three confirmed cases in Sheffield, but there could be many more as the government has stopped testing among the ones with minor symptoms due to capacity issues. Some of our classmates have flown back home and stopped coming to the class. It is very anxious and stressful to sit in a lecture theatre with 100/200 classmates, worrying being infected. In the case of self-isolation, we will be left alone to fight the virus without the support from our family.

Several leading universities including LSE, Durham, Loughborough have moved their teaching/assessment online. We would like Sheffield to follow and take more cautious measures to protect the interests of students and staff.

Your understanding will be much appreciated.
