This seems like terrible timing and something really quite damaging the long-term prospects of the University.
At a time when standards in interpreters and translators employed by the State is slipping so very badly and whilst Capita are employing unqualified and incapable people jobs in the Greater Manchester area, this is very sad.

Salford offers language courses that move away from the traditional literature-heavy element and focus on more practical skills; including work-based placements during the year abroad.

I can only echo all of the comments already made here. An astoundingly bad decision.

In an ever increasing global market activities, languages are vital - it is not just to communicate but to understand and therefore appreciate differences!!

Salford was a pioneer when I studied two languages and marketing there from 1993-1997. My degree was fundamental to my career to date, which has involved working in a variety of counties. It's not just about the languages you speak, but also the state of mind that exposure to languages gives you. I think the closure of the department would be a great loss to UK higher education.
