On March 24th, 2017 over a dozen students at the University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou) reported to MUPD that the catalytic converters on their cars were stolen by unknown persons. This is the third year in a row this type of theft has occurred in university parking lots and garages. Thousands of students and staff members are forced to pay $100+ to park in these lots and are under the impression that their vehicles will be kept safe. Now, students are being forced to pay hundreds more dollars to repair their vandalized vehicles. Studies have shown that parking lots/garages with surveillance cameras have a 51% decrease in crime, compared to ones that do not have cameras. Mizzou should be held more accountable for the activities that occur on their campus, and the goal of this petition is for the university to add surveillance cameras to their lots/garages.
