A few days ago, the second year cohort from the University of Leeds received communications that their marks for their most recent exams are being scaled back due to students performing very well on average and that the staff believing that the exam material was too easy. I believe that with everything that has gone on this year, with university-wide strikes and the coronavirus outbreaks, that this course of action the School of Maths has decided to take is absolutely ludicrous and is at great detriment to its students. The aim of this petition is to show to the department that its students are set against this course of action and highly recommend its reversal.

It is the responsibility of the lecturers who set the exams to choose material that is both challenging and gives students the opportunity to display their knowledge. It should not be so that students are made to suffer in terms of their grades due to these lecturers failing to do this. Students across the year have been forced to learn a large majority of the material themselves without any help during one of the most challenging times of the past few decades so why should their efforts now be completely disregarded?

Students have given months of their time this year, grinding away in order to ensure that they are able to perform academically and now that they have the school has made a completely arbitrary decision to make those efforts utterly worthless.

In addition, MATH2375 has been changed to a Pass/Fail and no longer counts towards our final grade which, after months of work, is a massive injustice to the whole year. We would like to have MATH2375 changed back to its original graded status and have it count towards our final grade as we deserve to know our marks and have it contribute to our degree.
