The College of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) strives to model diversity for the rest of the university and the nation, but our current icon is a relic of outdated thinking.  This icon is displayed at commencement on our college's gonfalon, or banner, behind the Deans and President. We ask the College of Family and Consumer Sciences to honor their commitment to modeling diversity by changing our icon to the Betty Lamp.

The Betty Lamp is a traditional icon of bringing light and knowledge into the home, which better represents all departments of the college as well as supporting diversity.

The current icon shows a "traditional" family: silhouettes of a man, woman, and a child.  FACS's own statement of diversity includes "gender, sexual orientation, gender identity" as categories that demand "acceptance and respect."  This current banner does not support non-heterosexual families that the College otherwise supports.  Changing the banner does not mean you hate families--actually, it means that you love families! All kinds of families! Families with one mom, two dads, or one grandparent and seven kids that are all functional and raise happy, healthy children.  Research has shown that positive representation is crucial for an individual's personal identity as well as their relationships with others (Martins and Harrison, 2012).

The old banner also excludes many departments in the college. It seems to focus on the Human Development and Family Science Department while ignoring others. Some of FACS's many departments include Nutrition Science, Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, Textiles, Furnishings and Interiors, Consumer Journalism, and Housing.  Changing the banner to the Betty Lamp will give each department equal representation at commencement.

Changing the icon to the Betty Lamp will bring the departments in the College of Family and Consumer Science closer together under the common cause of showing humanity to people of all gender identities, sexual orientation, and family structure.  The Betty Lamp can be the light of a catalyst for acceptance and support of diversity across campus and across the country.  Our goal is to change the banner before May 2015 Commencement so every graduating class from now on will enter society under a banner of inclusion, not of discrimination.
