The University of Colorado, Boulder is planning to develop approximately 129 of 308 acres of land known as CU South for more housing & campus buildings. The problem? These 308 acres are home to a rare wet meadow habitat containing federally protected plants & animals, & these 308 acres also serve as a floodplain for South Boulder communities. Boulder's engineers have unsuccessfully tried to reconcile CU's unexplained demand for a 129-acre campus in the floodplain. There is simply not enough room for CU's proposed development & adequate flood mitigation to take place in the 308-acre land parcel. CU is putting more pressure on the City of Boulder to allow them to build this environmentally destructive project that will leave South Boulder at an even higher risk of flooding. CU is also making tons of unprecedented demands, the worst of which is their demand to fill the CU South property with imported "earth fill" to raise the pit. In order to fill the area, it would require 28,000 truckloads being delivered every 5 minutes for 290 days - 80% of a year contaminated with dirt, dust, noise, environmental destruction, exhaust fumes, & expenditure of fossil fuels.

A group of South Boulder citizens started the Save South Boulder campaign, which advocates for certain conditions to be met if CU wishes to develop in the floodplain. In their Petition, "Citizens Conditions for the Annexation of CU South," certain conditions are laid out, some of which are: only 87 of the 308 acres may be developed for CU's new campus, there shall be a flood mitigation plan that is in line with the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Flood Plan, the Boulder City Charter, & the Boulder Revised Code, and that any housing that is built will remain as affordable housing. The conditions proposed, maximize the ability to provide flood protection to South Boulder communities, minimize the financial burden of the project on taxpayers, & limit the environmental impacts of the development. (If you are a Boulder citizen, go to savesouthboulder.com to find out where you can sign the Save South Boulder petition in person - unfortunately only in-person signatures count for that petition).

As a CU Boulder Alumni & a Boulder native, I am appalled that CU is willing to put its own community at risk & destroy such a rare & beautiful natural habitat. I walk my dog here at least 4x a week and have been coming for years! I hope that by spreading awareness, CU will recognize their greedy ways & cease their unprecedented demands for development.

By signing this petition, you are letting the University of Colorado, Boulder know that you do not agree with their environmentally destructive plans to develop 129 acres of the CU South property & that you are in support of the conditions proposed in the Citizens Conditions for the Annexation of CU South.

Thank you for signing & caring!
