Since the start of the 2020-2021 Academic Year, The University of Alabama’s Crimson Ride decided to make alterations to its Crimson Ride routes. The COVID-19 Pandemic was the initial cause for the routes to change. The change went from the original color-coded routes to “Residential” routes. The change to Residential routes has made students’ ways to get around campus very challenging. The change of these routes have made students have to walk from wherever they are to wherever they need to go because the buses now will not get students there in a timely manner. Students now find themselves having to walk everywhere regardless of the weather. It rains a lot in Tuscaloosa and due to there not being an adequate amount of buses, students find themselves having to walk in the rain and not making it to class in a satisfactory time. The change of the bus routes has also caused students to be later to class. The lack of buses operating around campus and the change of routes also has had an effect of students’ way around after hours. In the 2020-2021 school year, there were quite a few incidents where students were victims of armed robbery and other crimes. Students not having a reliable way of transportation after hours prevents students from walking through campus as the nights can sometimes be deemed unsafe. Prior to the change, students were able to get from wherever they were on campus to wherever they needed to go. For example, if a student needed to get to the Nursing School, they knew they could take Blue or Green. If a student is trying to go straight to their dorms, they could take Blue, Green, Crimson, Gold 1, or Gold 2. If a student was going to the recreation center, they could take Bronze 1 or Bronze 2. If a student needs to get to Reese Phifer or Tutwiler, they could easily catch Crimson, Blue, or Green. Those are just a few examples. The previous routes are: Blue, Green, Crimson, Gold 1, Gold 2, Silver 1, Silver 2, Bronze 1, and Bronze 2. Since The University of Alabama is back to full capacity classrooms and normal operations, the normal bus routes just seem more reasonable to make their return to make on-campus transportation for students much easier and less stressful. This petition is asking for The University of Alabama and Crimson Ride to bring back the color-coded routes from previous academic years.
