On behalf of many students at UAlbany enrolled in CHM115, we are requesting change. It was brought to our attention fairly recently that on the day of our final exam [December 8th], we were to be given a multi chapter exam in addition to our final, cumulative exam. (Exam 5, Chapters 8.5/9 AND The final, Chapters 1-8). As many students have voiced to their peers and their TA’s, we feel as though it is disadvantageous to the students to be given two differentiated exams in one sitting. We feel as though it would be easier to have these exams on separate occasions and since the semester has already concluded, we recognize that that is not possible. We are so graciously asking for a compromise. Please note that we are given only two hours to take two separate exams beginning fairly early in the morning (8am-10am). There is no time in between these exams for us to debrief and separate our knowledge and formulas needed for both of the separate exams. We do not feel as if it is fair to be given two exams in one sitting. We are asking that exam 5 be omitted from our final grade. However, that is not the only outcome that would be favorable. Perhaps it could be counted as an extra credit or an optional exam or it could be given online to us in the upcoming days of finals week or even potentially be weighted less in our final total grade. We appreciate Dr. Sayahi and her measures to ensure that we understand the course content however, the dilemma of the two exams being in the same sitting is overwhelmingly stressful. Having these two difficult exams in one sitting I would argue is not even healthy and is evidently leading to destructive practices amongst many individuals. Pulling all nighter‘s and relying on dangerous energy drinks is proven to be bad for our circulatory system. Relying on caffeine may be detrimental to our hearts and our minds. In conclusion, we are asking for a compromise of some sort, as many of us feel at a disadvantage.
