Two friendly students started this petition to The United Nations

‘Emily in Paris’ was recently nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, one for ‘Best Musical/Comedy Series’, and one for ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical/Comedy’ (Lily Collins).

Don’t get us wrong, this show may have been the lighthearted relief that we needed during 2020, but it was certainly not the groundbreaking material deserving of this level of praise. Fundamentally, it was a story about an American girl who used Instagram in Europe while having no awareness of her cultural surroundings. Indeed, multiple French critics pointed out that it was blatantly offensive.

One could argue that ‘Emily in Paris’ was a success based on viewer statistics. However, according to this logic, ‘Bridgerton’ should also have received a nomination, given that this immensely popular period drama has been viewed by 82 million households - making it the most watched Netflix show of all time.

More importantly, ‘Emily in Paris’ was not a comedy, because it was not funny. It was an enjoyable watch, but we did not laugh once, apart from when Lily Collins pronounced ‘Beyoncé’ like a 60 year old chainsmoker (which we believe was not meant to be funny).

Of course, we mean this as no insult to Lily Collins, who has done fantastic work elsewhere (e.g. BBC’s Les Mis), but it is hard to believe that this was a performance worthy of a Golden Globe. This is particularly the case when series like ‘I May Destroy You’ have been snubbed, in which Michaela Coel bravely explored themes of sexual assault and recovery - both as a writer and an actress.

We believe the UN needs to take immediate action to rectify this situation. One of the UN’s stated aims is to ‘keep peace throughout the world’, and we are sure you will agree that the world simply cannot be peaceful if this behaviour continues. Moreover, the UN claims that it endeavors to ‘develop friendly relations among nations’, and we firmly believe that if this situation is not addressed, war between the USA and France (nay, even WW3), is inescapable.

Thus, we are calling on the UN to demand that ‘Emily in Paris’ has its two nominations revoked. However, they could perhaps send Lily Collins a box of chocolates courtesy of us.
