Raging forest fires have engulfed millions of acres in Siberia and other parts of Russia, including 20 some million in Siberia alone according to Greenpeace Russia (or 11.5 million acres /4.5 million hectares according the the Russian government  )  an area at least the size of Europe, likely twice that. This environmental and humanitarian catastrophe has been growing exponentially for many weeks now . Not only is forest habitat and wildlife being lost and human health and life put at great risk from the dense smoke , now billowing towards Canada, but the burning of forest, scrub and peat is emitting enormous amounts of greenhouse gas in the form of CO2 into the atmosphere. Additionally, and very importantly, the already melting Arctic permafrost (frozen soil) is being put at risk of further heating and melting , thereby accelerating the process of dangerous release of methane stored in the permafrost (methane is 86 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2 over the first 20 years and 36 times over 100 years )

Now fires are also raging in the Brazilian and Bolivian Amazon , one of the major sources of the world's oxygen and a huge carbon sink , as well as a place with vast species diversity

We call upon the United Nations and the world community to:

1) Recognize the Arctic , and especially Siberia, as well as the world's rainforests  as perhaps THE world's greatest assets or losses in mitigating the effects of dangerous climate change, and thus its responsibility to protect these area as well as possible from fires and other events that cause warming , as well as carbon release and oxygen loss

2) Require Russia and other countries in or with areas in the Arctic to a) extinguish all Arctic fires within the geographical boundaries of their countries to the best of their ability without seriously endangering their economies and b) take aggressive steps to prevent large fires in the future

3) Require countries containing the worlds largest rainforests, including the Amazonian rainforest to extinguish all fires within the geographical boundaries of their countries to the best of their ability without seriously endangering their economies.

3) Adequately aid Russia and other Arctic countries or territories in extinguishing the currently burning fires immediately , as well as any future fires, by providing monetary and/or other resources such as equipment and fire-fighters

4) Adequately aid Brazil , Bolivia, and other countries or territories with large rainforests in extinguishing the currently burning fires immediately , as well as any future fires, by providing monetary and/or other resources such as equipment and fire-fighters
