Care leavers from all over the UK face housing issues when planning to go to university. Many in semi-independent / residential placements are forced out at 18 unlike many of their peers in foster care. When their 18th birthday falls months before they start university, many are forced to find housing and spend their leaving care grant buying furniture that they then have to find a place for when they move into student housing.

Care leavers in this position face a reality that the vast majority of their peers can’t comprehend and many are put off the idea of university altogether.

Also, having this stability throughout their further education exams (if applicable) provides these young people with a real opportunity to thrive. During a stressful time for all students, why should those who are facing this situation have that added stress?

I call on the UK Government to make it statutory law for local authorities to fund 18 year old university-bound care leavers’ placements until they start university to narrow the gaps in higher-education participation amongst care leavers and the general population. Also, local authorities should have a statutory duty to provide or fund the storage of furniture for care leavers, if furniture has been bought for a flat, for all care leavers that they have responsibilities for (for the full duration of their course) if the young person desires. I also call on the U.K. Government to provide adequate funding to local authorities to allow this to happen.
