Teenagers have long been suffering through the turmoil of education at GCSE level, but, due to the reformation of the examinations being both ill-informed and poorly executed, state secondary schools find themselves in the inescapable throws of collective misery.

As any teachers with half an ounce of enjoyment in teaching become scarcer and scarcer, pupils' mental health is becoming increasingly strained and it has become no uncommon sight to see students breaking down in lessons, or running from the school site because they can no longer cope with the fear of failure.

One may say that teenagers these days are simply 'snowflakes' and 'don't know what hard work is', but is it really fair to ask sixteen year olds, with or without learning difficulties, to decide their entire future in a subject from two hours of solid writing and then be surprised at the climbing suicide rate? Anybody with any experience in education would say no-it's a great shame that Michael Gove was completely unsuitable to make any kind of decisions that would affect the education of generations to come.

The removal of coursework for almost all subjects is an absolute abomination and means that many extremely talented students will not achieve the grades they deserve. A particularly large area of concern is it that, when assessed by 'AQA Food Preparation and Nutrition'', a student can only be awarded a maximum of 50% for actually preparing food. That said, without two excellent 2,000 word reports, the entire practical element of the course is totally null and those precious 100 marks will be lost. This is not the only subject with which exceptionally talented pupils will fail to perform to the same standard in the written part of the exams as in the practical and so will potentially fail a subject that they are gifted at. Leonardo da Vinci would fail his art GCSE if he couldn't write pages and pages of flawless explanation behind his thinking.

Teachers and pupils alike are utterly miserable and cracking under the pressure of departments that should have twelve teachers, but now, in the space of just this last academic year, have three. Schools cannot go on functioning like this-there will soon be a total collapse and crisis unless action is taken to improve the care and thought over how teachers and students are considered in Parliament.

Please, save the mental health of Britain's teachers and young people.
