Make the Minimum Wage the same as 25+ year olds for 18-24 year olds!

Ever since the National Minimum Wage Act was introduced in 1998[1], the minimum wage for 18-21 year olds has always been kept lower than the minimum wage for 22+ year olds.

In 2016, the gap was increased so that no-one below 25 years of age would have the “adult rate” minimum wage, instead having a “development rate”[2] minimum wage, with an extra category in between the two.

I have started this petition because I believe this is wrong. Once you leave full-time education, you are expected to pay for the same things that everyone else is expected to pay (for example, doctors prescriptions, eye tests/ glasses, dentist costs) yet at a smaller minimum wage.

Furthermore to this, under 25’s are often still expected to do the same job as their older counterparts yet at the lower minimum wage.

I am an 18 year old myself who is lucky enough to have one job that pays me the same as my co-workers. If this weren’t the case, then I would not be able to afford to save up enough to start renting for several years as I would be almost £3000 worse off (at the rate of 30 hours a week).

Being paid the “adult rate” minimum wage has allowed me to be able to start saving up so that I do not contribute to the statistic of still living at home.

I am lucky but not all jobs do the same, which is why I call on the UK Government to change the law so that 18-24 year olds get paid the same as 25+ year olds.
