The UK government have confirmed their plans to make it compulsory for restaurants to display the number of calories on their menus.

‘Between 1.25 and 3.4 million people in the UK are affected by an eating disorder. A 2017 study by Hay et al found that anorexia accounted for 8% of cases, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) 5%, binge eating disorder 22%, bulimia 19%.’

The addition of calorie counts to menus will result in an increase in eating disorders in the UK. Not only will it make current sufferers feel as though they are unable to eat out, but it will also have a huge affect on people recovering from an eating disorder. It is crucial that we act now before the policy is carried out in April 2022.

The timing of this alongside the pandemic cannot be much worse. Although the government may protest that tackling the obesity crisis can prevent more obesity related illnesses, there are other alternatives that the government must consider such as a separate QR code on menus that could display the calories for each meal.

As someone who not only knows many people who have recovered from eating disorders, or who continue to struggle with eating disorders but who has also personally struggled with restrictive eating and the constant obsession with calories & dieting. I am certain that seeing calories on menus will make it much harder for people who struggle with eating disorders.

Not only will people struggle with choosing their meals in restaurants but they are likely to pick the lowest calorie option due to their trepidation of eating higher calories. To have calorie counting imposed upon a nation who have barely experienced restaurant dining for a year since the pandemic is unsympathetic.

Please urgently sign this petition for the Government to consider other alternatives.
