Why this petition matters
Anybody who has ever taken a creative subject during any key stage of school, GCSE/A-level even at Degree level has probably been told once in their life or been made to feel that their subjects are "easy" and more often than not the institutions that hold the power to your academic success, openly favour the academically strong students who study Maths, further maths, Chemistry, Physics, English Literature, English Language, History, Politics, Law and so on. Although my college was lucky enough to have spacious performance facilities I am aware that is a luxury and not all colleges have to same funding to provide that. They prided themselves on academic success and being a leading college on the league tables, and would advertise performing arts evenings and upcoming shows. BUT, the bias for the academics over the "creatives" as I call it was plain as day. Now, it has become evident to me what the government's priorities are as last night in SOHO, there seemed to be no sign of social distancing or "staying safe" in sight. The theatres and cinemas will never open again at this rate due to the appalling behaviour of a minority who think that everything is back to normal now. Well it isn't and it's not going to be for a long time yet. The West end and Broadway are a major contributor to the economic rebound and growth of London and New York but it is more than that now. The Royal exchange in Manchester is going through the redundancy process and many other theatres don't think it's safe to open up, not because they don't want to (it's a livelihood for thousands of people) but because of the reckless and awful behaviour of some people who just want a drink at the pub. Remember what helped you get through lockdown. Films? Live-stream theatre productions? Have you booked a theatre trip for next year? Where doesn't that all originate from. Just think about it... Let's save the arts!
