The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) gave notice to 300 teachers in the city that their temporary contracts will end on January 2nd, 2020. According to the CBE executives, this was to cover the $32 million budget shortfall, in response to the provincial government announcing the provincial budget on October 24th, 2019.

This seems to be unnecessary and uncalled for, in terms of eliminating front-line staff in such a manner.

Besides parents, usually teachers are the most important figure in a child's life growing up. A special bond is built in some cases, because a child can learn and grow so much when a certain teacher provides his/her expertise, but also in other ways besides education, when it comes to compassion and the well-being of others.

A perfect example is a high school teacher helping a student deal with bullying; another could be assisting a child by referring them to a school counselor to help with other personal issues at home.

There are other cost-cutting measures that could be implemented by CBE, which would not include laying off 300 teachers. As a parent, I do not want my daughter's education to suffer, which it would with larger class sizes, and creating instability in her day-to-day routine by removing a key figure in her life in the middle of the school year.

Although there seems to be some discussion within the government ranks to do something about this decision, we as parents can make a difference too, by providing our feedback in large numbers. Please provide your information, and we can put forward a powerful voice through this petition.
