Today, dogs and cats are not allowed on Amtrak. Please sign this petition to allow pets to travel on Amtrak. It's really that simple.

Here is the detailed/background information:
In May 2013, Rep. Jeff Denham from California, introduced bill H.R.2066 - Pets on Trains Act of 2013. It is a bipartisan effort co-sponsored by 9 other House Representatives. You can read more about the proposed bill at: http://beta.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/2066.

This would also help the environment as pet owners would not be forced to travel via car to transport their pets. According to the AVMA, 36.5% of households in America have dogs.

Mr. Denham has stated that this is a personal issue for his family: “My dog, Lily, is part of our family and travels with us to and from California all the time. If I can take her on a plane, why can’t I travel with her on Amtrak too?”

We would like you to support this bill and sign this petition to require Amtrak to allow dogs. We agree with Mr. Denham - if dogs are allowed on airplanes, why are dogs not allowed on trains? We have witnessed Amtrak officials bring German Shepherds on the train in order to sniff out passengers with dogs on the train and then kick off the owner and their dog at the next station. Why is Amtrak allowed to do this?

In Europe, dogs are allowed on most trains. You can buy them a ticket and bring them with a leash on to the train with you or carry them in a dog bag. At the stations, you can take the dog out while the train is stopped.

We think the current bill H.R. 2066, is a very positive step in the right direction. The proposed bill states that relaxing the pet ban would help Amtrak raise revenue. There would be a fee for each dog or cat.

We’re not 100% in agreement with all the restrictions, but we’re glad this allows pet owners the option to bring their pets on Amtrak. The current bill H.R. 2066, as proposed, would restrict pets to one car. As a dog owner, I can understand that not everyone wants to ride with a pet in their train car. But it seems that allowing pets on more than one car on a train would be fine. I'm sure some pet owners would prefer a separate car for cats and dogs or a separate car for large and small dogs. Regardless, the current bill would require dogs and cats remain in a kennel and the total trip could not be longer than 750 miles. (We also don't understand why there is a restriction to 750 miles.)

The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, supports H.R.2066.

We appreciate your support on this effort. Please forward this petition to friends and family that are in agreement with this.
