The abolition of ice detention centers would improve the lives of immigrants and their families. In October 2020 there were 2654 children separated from their families. The conditions of these detention centers are revolting. People are put in cages with very little food for days, weeks, months. The people in these centers are rarely given hygiene products. A woman that was in custody of ICE said they were told to drink from toilet bowls due to a lack of water. The centers are so cold that they have caused illnesses. In 2018 700 migrants were infected with the mumps while in the detention center. Since these “cells” are so crammed that people are forced to sleep on the concrete floors. Time magazine states, “...The Department of Homeland security’s inspector general found 900 people crammed into a space designed to accommodate 125 at most.” They can be held for up to 577 days when waiting for a case in immigration court. Why are we treating people like animals? The trauma the United States is putting these people through is irreversible. We NEED to abolish ICE detention centers.
