Hundreds of psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals have publicly called for the removal of President Donald Trump on the basis of the obvious mental health disorder rendering him unfit to serve. President Trump's impulsive, irrational, and narcissistic behavior is a clear and present danger to democracy and peace within the United States of America. Furthermore, the reach and influence granted to Trump as the leader of our nation also make him a threat to global security.
It is an open secret that President Trump can be diagnosed with at least one mental health disorder--narcissistic personality disorder. To be clear, people facing mental health challenges should never be demeaned or stigmatized in any way. The problem is not that President Trump has a mental health issue. More specifically, the problem is that the extent of his personality disorder remains severe, unacknowledged, untreated, and enabled by the people President Trump chooses to surround himself with. The effects of his disorder under these circumstances skew his grasp and understanding of reality while significantly influencing his decision-making process, posing an urgent, serious threat to the health and integrity of the United States of America. The President has also proven, time and time again, to be a pathological liar.
The TRUMP Act will require that presidential candidates and sitting U.S. presidents undergo regular evaluation of their mental health, just as they do for their physical health. As American citizens, we can no longer afford to ignore the fact that a human being's mental health is just as critical to their wellbeing as their physical health. Under the TRUMP Act, if a majority consensus is reached by psychiatrists and psychologists that a candidate or sitting U.S. president exhibits the signs and symptoms of a diagnoses indicating that either a) they frequently break with reality or b) their decisions and/or decision-making process are frequently/significantly influenced by that diagnoses, then that evaluation will be released to the American public. The assessment can in no way legally prevent a candidate from becoming president, or likewise, disqualify them from office. The sole objective of the TRUMP Act is to satisfy the American public's right to know.
The TRUMP Act is specifically intended to work in conjunction with the long-standing and ethically necessary Goldwater Rule, as outlined in Section 7 of the American Psychiatric Association's Principles of Medical Ethics. Initially, a large pool of mental health professionals will convene to decide on the framework of the evaluation, and how the evaluation will be completed--as per current professional guidelines and standards of care. On each occasion an evaluation is performed, experts will be chosen at random from around the country from a large pool of vetted, prequalified candidates. These physicians will receive a request for participation in the mail--similar to a jury summons. If a candidate opts out of the engagement, an alternate candidate will be selected, until a small council--no larger than 12 members--is assembled. Council partners will not be permitted to speak publicly on findings. A consensus opinion is written and released to the public.
The Trump Act provides a sorely-needed counterbalance to the Goldwater rule, which struggles in modern times to reconcile its moral usefulness with the gaping void it has created, concerning the role of mental health in government and politics, by silencing the very voices most qualified to speak out on the matter. It behooves us, it behooves our democracy to address this void, instead of continuing to ignore it. The mental healthcare community has an ethical and professional obligation, by mandate of duty and American citizenship, to participate in this process.
