Lift of travel ban for Sweden in Malta

We, the Swedish community on Malta demand that the complete travel restrictions from Sweden* be lifted immediately, with or without inclusion to the so called “amber list”.

Sweden is the only EEA country completely banned for passenger travel to Malta, without mandatory completely isolated quarantine and or stay in a so called corridor country. This makes life extremely difficult for the Swedish community and businesses on Malta that relies on intra-community freedom of movement, while other EEA countries, which as per today have a significant higher community spread, may travel to Malta without the need for 14 isolated quarantine or stay in a corridor country.

As per legal notice 92 of 2020, The Superintendent of Health has banned all passenger travel to and from Malta as per 2020-03-21. The restrictions have since been lifted through a number amendments for various EU countries and other third countries. As per the last amendment, Malta is effectively open for travel to from all EEA countries except Sweden, with so called “amber restrictions” for some countries.

We find it absurd that Malta bans travel from Sweden while it allows for travel to and from other EU countries, many of which, as of September 2020 have significantly higher community spread of the Covid-19 virus, including but limited to Spain, France, Croatia, etc.

We find it even more absurd that while Malta introduced the so called amber list on 2020-08-21, with stricter requirements for travel, it opted to not include Sweden even there.

We find this treatment discriminatory and not scientifically motivated and demand the ban to be lifted immediately, with or without inclusion to the amber list.
