Emily Brothers is a dedicated LGBT campaigner, and Labour's first Transgender candidate. Representation within politics is essential within our society, and this is a big step in the right direction. Congratulations to Ms Brothers.
However, the celebrations that should be surrounding this event have been ruined. In an appalling spew of ableist and transphobic garbage, Rod Liddle wrote of Ms Brothers - who is blind - in Britain's most widely read newspaper this week, "She’ll be standing at the next election in the constituency of Sutton and Cheam. Thing is though, being blind, how did she know she was the wrong sex?". This 'joke' is insensitive, unfunny, and relentlessly offensive. A newspaper that has such a huge hold on people ought to be ashamed that even the thought of printing this mindless transphobia and ableism was permitted, never mind actually publishing it!
The advocation of 'gender is visual ' attitudes such as this within The Sun is dangerous and hurtful, and they need to issue an apology for their hate speech immediately as well as ensuring Mr Liddle is made seriously accountable for his actions. In addition to this, some decent, sincere recongition of how much of an inspiration Emily is, is definitely needed!
