Students Of Omro High started this petition to the students; teachers; and board of Omro High School

At Omro High School, the school board and leaders have decided to collect phones at the beginning of every class. This is to ensure there are less distractions during class periods. While some people are upset by this decision, many students understand that it is a positive change and see that it will promote a better learning environment.

But the High School has also decided to collect phones during study hall periods. This is what we  are petitioning for. The students of Omro ask that we may have the privilege back to allow our phones in study hall. If a student does not want to work... taking their phone away simply will not change that fact. Students will just find other ways to fill their time, which will most likely be in bad ways. Many students use their phones for beneficial reasons. These benefits include: listening to music, communicating with family, using an app as a daily planner, using a calendar to check their availability, communicating with their boss’s and jobs, reviewing notes they took pictures of, checking to-do lists and notes, communicate with other classmates about class work or after school activities, learning when is appropriate to use cell phones on our own during personal work times helps creates responsibility, and many more reasons that phones are beneficial.

While we do have access to chrome books, many of the benefits reasoned about above are not available on your chrome books. And we already have breakfast with books designated to reading. Many students at Omro High will not read even as a last resort. With all homework done, no tests to study for, and nothing to work on with our chrome books. Students are left with nothing to do. When someone gets bored they will resort to doing something to fill their time. These things could be: sleeping, pen tapping, talking with people in class or distracting others around them. Times in between classes are not enough to do all of the beneficial things listed in the paragraph above. And breakfast and lunch should be used to be social with friends, and talk face to face, not through texting and not used for playing on your phones. By at least having their phones in one class period a day, students will be more inclined to want to socialize with friends when they get to actually talk to them and work on verbal communication skills that are necessary for the real world. Phones could also be taken away during study hall if students are missing work or have INC on any summative assessments.Once they finish missing work, they would get their phones back. This is to ensure that they have their work done.

We understand that teens these days are very invested in their phones and that the school is simply trying to get us off our phones for awhile. But we all just ask, that you let us have our study halls to relax and possibly use our phones when we decide to. We all are trying to be more prepared for life and need to learn how to manage time on our own. These are life skills that are necessary for survival in the harsh world that we all will be thrown into in just a couple of years. In a mere 4 years or less, we all will be on our own, no one there to look over our shoulders and make sure we are working. We are responsible for our own actions and if we decide to not work; then we will fail. Simply put, if we aren’t self teaching ourselves how to be independently responsible, then we aren’t learning responsibility at all. After high school we need to be able to multi manage work, college, and technology all at once and our college professors, or boss at work, will not care if we fail.

Please consider all point made in this petition and see that students the politely are asking to please allow us the privilege to keep our phones during study hall. We come to the board, and school leaders with respect.
