I am a student at UNT trying to create a forum for students to talk about their mental health struggles in a safe space among peers on a weekly basis. In the Fall of 2018, I submitted an application to get this organization recognized under student activities, which is necessary to book rooms and have access to various resources on campus. The org was initially denied because its “similarity” to another mental health org on campus, but these two orgs are very different and have different purposes. I appealed this decision and was still denied another time. This time around, I need my UNT community’s support to show UNT this is something we want and NEED in the community. The Peer to Peer Observe it. Understand it. Think about it(O.U.T) is the official name of my organization. The mission of O.U.T is to encourage, uplift, and support students to talk about the reality of mental health, while providing a consistent safe space filled with empathy and understanding in a judgement-free zone. As college students we are constantly battling mental health issues and balancing school work, financial responsibilities, friendships, family issues, housing issues, and more. For many, therapy is not financially feasible or time sensitive. Additionally, some students feel more comfortable venting to peers versus a doctor. This org is not a resolution to every mental health issue, but it is definitely an additional resource that is free, consistent and genuine. If you believe this organization could make a difference on UNT’s campus, that you yourself could benefit from this organization, and that this organization is something you will utilize as a resource, please sign!
