Recently, a student at Binghamton University has been wrongly punished and sanctioned for an incident in which he had minimal involvement. The student accused was pressured to allow his room to be utilized by friends to purchase marijuana, and on one occasion went to the floor above his own to pick it up for friends from a different person. The student accused has never made a sale or owned the marijuana, yet the university chose to pursue maximum sanctions against him. The student accused has never been in any trouble related to the law or student conduct violations, and has done something clearly out of character. The typical sanctions against the first offense of the possession of marijuana is 1-year disciplinary probation. The Binghamton University Conduct Council has decided to expel the accused student. We believe that this student did nothing more than temporarily possess marijuana, a mistake to which the student has owned up to. Expulsion is something that can damage the future of students and we do not believe that this sanction fits the actions of the student.
