Protect Planned Parenthood Cancer Screenings for Texas Women

As a result of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening program administered by Planned Parenthood in Texas, I am alive today.

Five years ago, I found a lump in my breast and another lump in my lower abdomen. I was then, and still am, a full time caregiver to my elderly parents. Like all women with no access to affordable healthcare who experience serious and unexpected health problems, I was very scared and I had no idea where to turn.

After several weeks of fear and denial, I finally discussed it with my then 81 year-old Mother.  She’s the one who suggested Planned Parenthood.  I couldn’t believe that I didn’t think of it first.  I now had hope of getting some help.  I called and was seen the next day – without insurance and regardless of my ability to pay.

After my examination Planned Parenthood referred me immediately for further testing through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Grant program.

Thankfully, the lump in my breast was benign.  But the lump in my abdomen was a very aggressive form of cancer – Ovarian Clear Cell Carcinoma.  There are currently no tests for ovarian cancer and by the time symptoms start to appear, the cancer is usually too advanced for someone to survive.  But because of Planned Parenthood’s expertise in women’s health and cancer screenings, my ovarian cancer was diagnosed at Stage 1a.

This was unbelievably good news for me and for my family.  If not for Planned Parenthood and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening program, I have no doubt I would not be here today.

I’ve decided to share my story because the Texas State Senate has recently threatened to take away Planned Parenthood’s funding for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening programs, further marginalizing Texas citizens and keeping them from necessary and lifesaving access to medical care.

Sign today to join me in saying that you Stand With Planned Parenthood in Texas. And that you support Planned Parenthood’s ability to provide Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings.

The simple truth is that Planned Parenthood's cancer screenings save lives.  I - along with countless others - am still here and healthy today because of Planned Parenthood.  This is a fact.
