Ashley Macha started this petition to THE STATE OF TEXAS

Hi, Im Ashley Macha and I am a junior at Heritage High School in Frisco, Texas.  Most people who know me know that I have lots of medical issues , one for which I had to go homebound for my 2nd semester of sophomore year.  I started going back to school in August to start my junior year and between then and now I have received 30 makeup hours. I can understand why I have hours to makeup for tardies and unexcused absences , but I have a hard time understanding why students are at risk of losing credits due to excused absences which are usually for health appointments or something of the sort. Im well aware of the 90% rule but I still strongly believe that health related absences should not count against a student. In October alone, I had at least 2 doctors appointments every week and in November, I missed a day for a medical procedure and now I'm missing today because i'm sick which is not uncommon, etc. Most people would argue and say," schedule your appointments before or after school." It is not fully up to the students and their parents on what time of day their appointment will be. Doctors schedules are constantly full and so you just take what time is avaliable.  Doctors also aren't commonly avaliable on the weekends so that is usually not even an option. Out of  the 9 months we attend school, we get 33 days off. 2 or 3 in which are only given if we have no bad weather days and then we have the holiday breaks in which lots of people , including doctors, go out of town. So the time away from school to get these appointments in are limited and usually difficult to book due to everyone else rushing for appointments as well. It also was brought to my attention that even being sent home by the school nurse will bring you closer if not there already to makeup hours. I believe it does put extra stress on students because as school Is important, so is our health and we have to make time for both. Students shouldn't have to stress about credits or makeup hours just for having to attend doctors appointments during school. We are told daily by our teachers and parents that our grades are our responsibilities , so let them be. Instead of punishing unmade up time with the loss of credits, let us do what we always do when absent. We get the work we missed when we return and from then on it is our responsibility to do what is required of us to get the credit for that class instead of threatening the loss of credits over the time we missed because of an absence that fits under the excused criteria. Lately, I've heard students say that they can't even establish a difference between excused and unexcused anymore due to the fact that we are penalized for both. As I mentioned before, I know what the 90% rule is and I know it even includes excused absences but that doesn't mean I have to think its fair to the students or parents who have to stress everyday about when they can go to the doctor next and not face consequences from the state even if it is as little as 1 to 2 makeup hours. The students health is just as much a priority as school and they shouldn't have to give one up for the other. In conclusion, I believe that the 90% rule should only count against unexcused absences and tardies and let excused absences with documentation from a doctor, etc. roll with no penalty.
