My name is Ethan Evans. I am 21 years of age and I am a seventh generation Iowan. Since I was a young teen I have dealt with chronic pain, fatigue, extreme anxiety, and depression, all of which are symptoms of Fibromyalgia, which I was diagnosed with about 2 years ago. I experimented with marijuana as a teen and found that it relieved a lot of my problems.. But there was a major drawback: the legality. I pursued an answer through traditional medicine, only to end up with more problems. Today's pharmaceuticals come with such side effects that more often  than not, I ended up with worse and sometimes more difficulty than I started with. There came a point at which my doctor asked me if I'd like to go on painkillers. And I could not accept that treatment option, as it would be a sentence to long-term opiate addiction. Marijuana would allow my pain to be managed, without the need for physically addictive chemicals. Marijuana has been used for thousands of years by the human race, without a single death that can truly be attributed to the substance. By keeping cannabis outlawed, we are forcing people, such as myself, with actual diseases and severe medical problems to engage in a black market in order to receive a naturally occurring medicine. THC, the main active ingredient in the cannabis plant, has been proven by scientific studies to lessen the symptoms of Crohn's Disease (which another of my family members has been diagnosed with), Fibromyalgia, Cancer and countless other diseases and ills. There have even been studies that indicate Tetrahydrocannabinol has the potential to kill cancer cells. We can use hemp derived medicines to help save peoples lives AND improve the lives of countless Iowans suffering from medical conditions which can be effectively treated through use of cannabis or a cannabis derivative medicine. The science is there. It's time our laws parallel our science and we end the needless suffering and imprisonment of countless Iowans who were harming no one. Each year, approximately 5,000 young people die as a result of drinking, according to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division. More than 10,000 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2010, or one every 51 minutes. Alcohol is addictive and deadly, with no medicinal value. But it is legal and controlled. Why? Because prohibition DOES NOT WORK. Marijuana is medicinal, natural, and not one single human in the thousands of years of marijuana consumption has died from it's use. Stop the insanity. Legalize the posession, growth, and sales of Cannabis for adults and afflicted Iowans who have obtained a doctor's prescription (regardless of age).

Information about promising cancer and cannabis related findings can be found all over the internet. Most of this search for information I leave to the individual and their Google searches. However, I will post a passage from Cancer.gov, which I believe to be fairly enlightening for those who doubt my statements and question the competency of my personal research and/or decision making.

"Studies in mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells."

I support the legalization of cannabis for adults and afflicted Iowans. I recognize the social ill the current legislation causes and I recognize the need for positive change. The prohibition of marijuana is a needless waste of tax dollars, police time and effort, and the further prohibition of this substance contributes to a vast number of social ills that it need not, as it is medicinal and natural. According to the U.S. constitution, every U.S. citizen has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Marijuana medicine saves and changes lives. By denying us natural medicine, our right to life for some is being infringed upon. By denying us natural medicine our liberty to maintain our own health through natural and safe methods is being infringed upon. And by imprisoning Iowans for Marijuana crimes, we're infringing upon their rights to all three, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I demand change in my state.
