This electronic petition will be forwarded to the Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka and the Chairman of the Elections Commission, Sri Lanka. The petition is as follows:

To:
Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka and Chairman, Elections Commission of Sri Lanka,

Subjected to a due process, any political party or a person eligible to vote has a fundamental right to contest in an election. Therefore, military-police harassment against the SEP Jaffna district candidates is a contemptible violation of these fundamental rights.

These actions are being continued even after the letter sent to you by General Secretary SEP (Sri Lanka), Wije Dias on 20.06.2020, demanding and immediate stop to violation of SEP’s democratic political rights and the threats to the security of the party candidates. We also see a danger of these harassments against political activist continuing even beyond the elections.

Therefore we request you to immediately stop the military-police harassments against the SEP candidates and ensure their democratic rights.

Protest notes should be sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, with copies sent to the Chairman of the Election Commission and the Socialist Equality Party.
