We the undersigned, call on DWP management to reverse their decision to close offices in Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport and Gabalfa in Cardiff and relocate 1,700 jobs to a new site at Treforest Industrial Estate. This proposal would deprive hard-pressed communities of badly-needed public sector jobs. Moreover a high proportion of existing staff would simply be unable to relocate to the new office, due to travel distance, disabilities, caring responsibilities, poor transport links and lack of parking at the new site. The current staff have many years of experience in providing DWP services and we are concerned about the impact on the quality of services to the public if many of these staff and their knowledge and experience were lost to the DWP. We are also sceptical about any idea that the construction of a new office, on a site identified as a flood risk, represents value for money for the taxpayer. We request that, where possible, the leases on the existing buildings be extended so that staff can continue working in their current locations, or failing that, that suitable alternative accommodation is found nearby. These jobs help sustain local communities and bring revenue to local businesses; their loss would be keenly felt and we therefore urge the Department to reconsider this damaging decision.
