Barrister Biswanath Mishra played a dedicated role in the Oriya movement for amalgamation of Oriya - speaking tracts scattered under different provinces under one administration and in the formation of Orissa as a separate province. Biswanath Mishra was one such forgotten pioneer of the Oriya movement who represented and epitomized the early wave of Oriya nationalist consciousness or as has been said "Jatiprana Sindhura Adya Taranga".
Biswanath Mishra was not only the first Odia Barrister from Middle Temple, London, and a pioneer of Oriya movement , he had also many other feathers to his cap. He was, as it were, a sober and liberal social reformer, a learned and efficient lawyer, a torch bearer of women's awakening, a well- wisher of student community and an advocate of education, an effective parliamentarian and a matured politician. He was twice elected to the Central Provincial Assembly in 1922 & 1930 where he was addressed as Mr. Orissa for his untiring efforts to unite Orissa. He was an active participant of Utkal Sammalini. It is unfortunate that one of the founding fathers of Orissa state and one who worked relentlessly for the recognition and upliftment of the Odia language has been ignored so long.
Therefore the birth anniversary of this great Odia son of the soil must be celebrated at the Government level and the Government must take all necessary steps to keep the memory of Utkal Ratna Barrister Biswanath Mishra’s memory alive in the capital city of Odisha as well as all over Odisha by installing statues and other means.
