As a student myself, I’ve been getting as much as 5-6 hours of sleep daily. The work isn’t hard, per se, but it is time-consuming. I get at home around 5-6 pm. Meaning, I only have a little while to do homework AND eat dinner, brush my teeth, and get ready for bed. Many students do not get at least 8 hours of sleep per day. According to multiple studies, teens need more or equal to 8 hours of sleep. We need it because our bodies are still developing and growing. If we do not get 8 hours of sleep (which is the bare minimum) our health will be deteriorating, and our height may be stunted, just because of school. If we do not get enough sleep, our grades may fall and we won’t be able to pay attention in class. It’s an endless cycle. Most kids just don’t want to do the work because of how tedious it is, that’s why some of us are failing. I’d also like to add more beneficial factors to school, things we will need in the future.

I’d like for the teachers to take into consideration that we do have lives outside of school. Many of us play sports and get home at a later time, leaving less time for homework. Now, I’m not saying get rid of homework as a whole, I’m saying we should have teachers that care about our wellbeing. I’m also saying that due dates should not be so early. As well as that, consider that other teachers give out homework, too. It’d be nice for days or periods where the students get a mental break from the stress. Kids can be stressed just like adults can, we are no different. I’d like to add days where we learn coping mechanisms. Maybe how to deal with loss or how to control your emotions. Maybe we could add a self-defense course in P.E. This may be a big goal that might not be easy to reach but I’d like to at least try, can we shorten school hours?

When I wake up, it’s 6-7 AM. When I get home, it’s 5-6 PM. Meaning, I spend 11-12 hours away from home. That leaves no time for bonding, no time for breaks, just work. Many students are just like me.

If our goals are failed to be met, we will carry on in this constant miserable state. Recently, rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental issues have increased. I’m not saying that school is the cause of this but it could be if this goes on. Do we really want that?

We need school officials, principals, government officials, to see what we’re doing. In order to get change, we must seek help in one another. Let us rise up and let this be known. As they say, one for all and all for one.
