Why this petition matters

I want to start by saying I am very disappointed in our school system. I understand that the world is crazy right now, and a lot is going on, but our school is not putting our safety or mental health first while being in school while a pandemic is at its peak. Both the teachers and students are trying their best, but it is hard when the school makes last-minute decisions. The school year has been draining not just for students but also for teachers. The transition has been challenging and different for most, especially since we all learn differently. Midterms being removed from last year's learning curriculum made students feel unhurried and like there was no lousy grade hanging over their heads. Many kids at Jonathan Dayton do have test anxiety, and they feel they cannot perform their best. There are better alternatives and activities that can be done to evaluate how much students have learned during the first half of the year. Each student has about 4-6 classes where they will need to take a midterm, teachers have not given an outline or study guide, and the school has still not made their final decision. Juggling school, work, projects, and home life, students feel that two weeks is not enough time to study everything that we have learned over the course of months and get a desired grade. As well as covid, some students are transitioning between online and in-person learning, which can impact how much they learn and what they may be behind on as it is difficult for teachers to have every single one of their students on the same page. This puts virtual students behind and gives them an even more significant disadvantage for midterms. Students understand that the teachers try their best to accommodate us, and some are even against midterms. On the other hand, the school board puts our safety and mental health after our education. Students and parents will be expressing their concern about this topic because most people except for the Board Of Education seem to be on the same page. Students feel that they should not be graded or evaluated on how they do on an exam; more plays into being a great student. Thank you.
