Remove "Sound Off" from the Saratogian
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
We the undersigned are a group of citizens who are concerned about the tone that the Saratogian sets for our community newspaper through the inclusion of “Sound Off” both in the editorial section and online. Not every “Sound Off” caller makes offensive, nasty, or hateful comments, but providing the public a forum for voicing opinions anonymously allows those who don’t want to have their name associated with their opinion a venue to speak. We believe in the First Amendment and believe that civil discourse involving different opinions is the only way we can understand other perspectives, recognize differences, and work together for the greater good of our community. Aren’t the opinion pages/ letter to the editor sufficient for people to express their ideas in an open forum where ideas can be discussed and challenged?
Continuing to publish “Sound Off” is reinforcing the idea to everyone who reads the paper that anonymous comments that are offensive, nasty and/or hateful are acceptable in our community. Please consider our request.
