STOP Mental Health Discrimination Against Children and Young People Who Are Associated With A Childcare Setting

This petition made change with 1,304 supporters!

The Equality Act 2010 means that public bodies, such as the NHS, Local Authority and government departments, have to take steps to:

• Stop discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

• Promote equality of opportunity between people who share a characteristic (such as disability) and those who do not.

• Promote good relations between people who share a characteristic (such as a disability) and those who do not

And yet – as a registered childminder who follows guidelines by the governing body OFSTED and who has been graded OUSTANDING twice by OFSTED, I am now faced with this very difficult situation.

My 16 year old daughter who has had Mental Health issues for 5 years, without issue in relation to my childminding business; has been recently been told by OFSTED that she is "unsuitable to be around children" despite their being no changes to her mental health since she turned 16.

I have been told that I must decide to either deregister as a childminder or ask my daughter to move out of the family home.

Mental Health can and does affect people from all walks of life. They all need support and understanding, and those who have supported them in the past without any issues arising that have or might impact on other children, should be able to continue to do so.

By signing this petition you are supporting childminders who have children with a mental health illness, or who look after children over 16, to be able to continue to work in their profession and to stay registered with OFSTED
