Scrap IELTS exams for Ghanaians going to work or school in the UK!

Why must Commonwealth university graduates who have passed all their exams at Ghanaian universities where the medium of instruction has been the English Language be compelled to write IELTS exams as a requirement for university admission and visa to the UK? Sign this petition to rally support to scrap it.

Many Ghanaians are saying the English language exam requirement is exploitative and essentially a revenue generation programme by the UK government.  Our MP Rockson Dafeamekpor has presented the issue before Ghana’s Parliament on February 03, 2022. The legislator believes the requirement is not necessary for Ghanaians as the English Language is the medium of instruction across all levels of teaching and learning. In his view, the requirement is burdensome and poses a lot of inconveniences for Ghana, therefore, it must be scrapped.

Ghana’s Parliament has subsequently directed the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament and Ghana Education Service (GES) to ascertain why Ghanaians are required to write various English Language Examinations before they could be offered admission or job in the UK.

The UK Home Office has a list of 18 countries whose citizens are exempt from writing an English proficiency test (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.) when they seek to study or migrate to the UK, including; Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Malta, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, to mention a few. However, it will interest you to know that there is no Anglophone African country (out of 20+ English-speaking countries on the continent) on the Home Office list.
