Melanie Emmerson started this petition to The Rt Hon Dr Therese Coffey and

The Government are going to remove the £20 / week "uplift" to Universal Credit. Even their own back benchers are against it! A single, unemployed person will be given only £320 (aprox) to live on each month, and this figure will form the basis for the sum payable to families across the country. Not only that, but while the popular focus is on the unemployed, there may be millions of people who don't realise that Universal Credit is also the benefit awarded to people who are disabled or too sick to work. They too will be penalised. In a time of rapidly rising costs to REDUCE the sum paid to the poorest in society is heartless and a disgrace. Besides Therese Coffey the Secretary for the DWP who is responsible for Universal Credit, and the Chancellor, their opposite numbers in the shadow cabinet must work hard for benefit recipients in challenging the decision. Universal Credit is in a terrible mess and Therese Coffey has been almost silent and invisible throughout the pandemic despite millions having to turn to benefits. The majority of people who work at Universal Credit have never even heard of her! Now that she has spoken up, it is to announce the £20 / week reduction in payment!
