Tighter Control of Air Weapons - End preventable fatalities and life changing injuries

On 1st May 2016, our Ben aged 13 was accidentally killed by an air weapon while playing with friends. We all miss him so very much and feel compelled to get the control of air weapons updated so nobody else has to go through what we as his family and friends are having to endure.

Since Ben’s tragic death we have been campaigning for the Government to introduce a Licensing regime to ensure stronger control around secure storage and safe keeping of lethal air weapons, so that children are unable to access them without permission and to prevent misuse. Additionally, we have been campaigning for the review of the legislation relating to the standard of manufacture as the air weapon that killed Ben was not made by a recognised manufacturer and had a number of safety deficiencies including but not limited to a very light trigger and the absence of a safety catch.

Following recommendation by the Coroner that the Government reviews the current legislation in view of the issues highlighted above so that steps may be taken to prevent similar tragedies occurring in the future, Ben’s family and friends are pleased that on 12th December the Home Office announced that a full review was underway.

Put simply, existing controls are not sufficient, there have been numerous child fatalities and serious injury in recent years. We believe that Ben would be alive today if the laws and regulations had been appropriately updated to mirror those on licensed fire arms when previous tragedies had occurred.

Please help us get the laws and regulations updated to prevent further child deaths and life changing injuries by signing our petition to the Minister of State for Policing and the Fire Service The Right Honourable Nick Hurd MP who is undertaking the review.

Ben’s family and friends very much appreciate your support.
