Why this petition matters

With all that has happened over the last few years, the teacher shortage is off the charts. So many are dropping out of teaching. Therefore the need is very high for teachers in our state, and many others. With this large issue, you would think that people would want to make it more accessible, and not quite as impossible for more people to become teachers. However, this does not seem to be the case. It is quite the opposite. With an already challenging program in which those going into teaching need to get a certain amount of hours of time in the classroom, and also accomplish many assignments, there is, even more, being required. On top of getting these hours at an inconvenient time that makes it nearly impossible to have any type of job that supports you through school, there is now even greater requirements. When University students are at the most intense and stressful time of their learning, Student Teaching, they are now being asked to do a PPAT. This is a very tedious task that takes an excessive amount of time. While being in school all day, and working like crazy to not get paid, students also are given an insane amount of tasks to complete along with the planning and carrying out of Student Teaching. This gives no time at all to have another job. If you think about the most common demographic that teaches, it is usually moms. This makes it nearly impossible and turns many mothers away as they will not be able to invest that time. On top of that, it almost always turns away many males that may be expected to earn money to support their families. They cannot afford to take an entire semester off of work. Therefore, the PPAT seems very unnecessary for those attending a University, and already doing many assignments beforehand, and during their practicum. It would help for many to not drop out of being afraid of the tremendous time commitment, and then we would have more teachers.
