The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, a reserve regiment in the Canadian Army, have admitted that they attacked Métis people at Fish Creek and Batoche in 1885. They now claim ownership of Louis Riel's walking stick.
The Royal Winnipeg Rifles claim to own the walking stick and have loaned it to the Manitoba Museum for several months.
It is fundamentally unjust for Canada's military to claim ownership of Riel's possession as war loot. Canada must return this item to the Métis people immediately.
