Hello my name is Andy Johnson. I'm a Redondo resident and founder of the Redondo Beach Cleanup Team. We do beach cleanups every week. What we've found in doing these weekly beach cleanups is, as we all know, that we have a huge problem with plastic pollution right here in Redondo Beach.

What we're suggesting is that our city leaders help us to reduce the impacts of plastic pollution by adopting legislation that will solve this problem. We are asking that Redondo Beach food services businesses only provide plastic straws and cutlery upon request. Very often when we order take out, straws and utensils are provided and not even used. Let's change all that by taking this small step in the right direction. This is a very business friendly approach and will undoubtedly save money for our local businesses. It's a win win proposition. We're calling our campaign Green Redondo and will be working closely with Surfrider South Bay and other organizations to make this happen because, as members of a coastal community like Redondo Beach, we have an added responsibility to protect our oceans and coast line from this kind of pollution.

“The World Economics Forum report “The New Plastics Economy” states that “without significant action, there may be more plastic than fish in the ocean, by weight, by 2050.” Everyday, in the United States, 500 million straws are used and thrown away. Many of these straws end up in our oceans and on our beaches. They are among the most common items we find at our beach cleanups. Plastics such as straws and utensils take hundreds of years to break down.

While these items are in the ocean, they're a huge threat to the marine ecosystem in a number of ways. We often hear that over 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million sea birds are killed by plastic pollution each year.

The time to for Redondo Beach to take action is now!! Let's take responsibility for the pollution that's in our community. Please visit Redondo Beach Cleanup Team on Facebook for more information on Green Redondo.
