This petition draws the attention of the House to serious concerns about the environmental, social, economic and cultural impacts of a proposal for an onshore shipping terminal, hotels, casino, condominiums, marinas etc in the Broadwater and coastal areas as proposed by Gold Coast City Council Mayor and other development companies. Objections to these development proposals include - The handing over of public open space in the Broadwater and coastal areas for private benefit, the impact of massive dredging and construction on the marine/foreshore environment, loss of biodiversity, pollution, impact on south to north sand movements, the impact on existing diving, fishing, surfing and tourism businesses using coastal areas, the loss of proven economic benefit the area delivers, increased traffic in a congested road systems, costs to ratepayers/taxpayers for ongoing dredging, maintenance and area upkeep, potentially devastating upstream flooding, the lack of credibility of economic benefits, and failure to consider the impacts of climate change. Your petitioners therefore request that the State Government advise the Gold Coast City Council to accept the massive negative economic, social and environmental impacts of the proposed terminal and hotel proposal and discontinue any investigations into any onshore shipping terminal developments along the Gold Coast and any commercial developments at Wavebreak Island, South Stradbroke Island and north of Seaworld Nara resort on The Spit - instead that they preserve and promote the Broadwater and other coastal areas as essential recreational and open space assets for the city.
