Stop the destruction of Tallebudgera Ck and Burleigh Heads NP by the Light Rail

The current route for the proposed light rail from Burleigh to the GC Airport requires the excavation of a large portion of Burleigh Heads National Park and a new bridge to be constructed on the eastern side of the current road bridge across Tallebudgera Ck. The environmental and social impact of removing the amenity of the area rated as the No 1 swimming hole in Australia cannot be justified.

Burleigh Heads National Park is also home to the areas local Koala population and a popular spot for walkers of all ages.

The construction of the Light Rail is not minor works as evidenced by the light rail bridge constructed at Southport, the overhead power lines along the GC highway, the constant noise from trams as they pass and the pollutants that run off the hard concrete surfaces directly into the waterway.

Added to this, the intermodal study by the Dept of Transport includes widening the bridge crossing for bikes and pedestrians increasing the width of the bridge and its impact on Tallbudgera Ck even further. The impact of the bridge will also remove all public car parking at Tallebudgera Ck.

Is this the best we can do? The Gold Coast is world renowned as a tourist destination and yet the current politicians think it is more important to deny the alternatives and blindly push to deliver a $13bn light rail link to the Airport without finding a solution to protect one of the most iconic and spectacular natural locations on the Gold Coast.

Join us and make your voice count before the state election and tell the political leaders there is no justifiable social, environmental or economic solution that involves the excavation of Burleigh Ridge and the construction of a new major bridge through Tallebudgera Creek to carry the light rail.
