Natalie Golisch started this petition to The Prime Minister Scott Morrison and State and Federal Parliaments

Like most Australians I have been sickened and horrified by the constant unending violence perpetrated against women by some men in Australia. I despair about the loss of beautiful people such as Hannah Clarke and her children, not to mention Eurydice Dixon, Courtney Herron, Aya Maasarwe, Stephanie Scott, Jill Meagher... the list goes on and on and these names are just from the high profile cases...

Eight women have been killed violently this year and the murder of a woman by a man happens about once a week in Australia. In 2019 there were five women killed in just one week alone!! Almost one in three women have experienced physical violence and one in five have endured sexual violence so I think it's time that women have the opportunity to protect themselves and have the same rights as those in the US.

I am not asking for more guns and tasers, I am simply asking for pepper spray to be legalised in Australia under certain conditions. Pepper spray is currently allowed in Western Australia "If it is carried or possessed by a person for the purpose of being used in lawful defence in circumstances that the person has reasonable grounds to apprehend may arise." Of course the use of Capsicum Spray would have it's own issues, problems, bugs to be worked out and debates centred around it however if it saves just one person then I think it's worth it. It might not even have to be used - it could just be used as a deterrent... All I'm asking for is just to us women to be given a fighting chance..

I'm sick and tired of the rhetoric about "changing the hearts of men", and programs that violent men have to wait months to get into and strategies which have shown minimal reductions in violence against women and their children. It's clear that interventions that are supposed to prevent men's violence just aren't working.

I have nieces that I care about and worry what will happen to them in the future. As there are 12.6 million women in Australia this issue affects all of us as we have wives, daughters, sisters and nieces etc. that we too care about. I would feel so much more secure if we just had some tools to properly defend ourselves without having to do things like costly self defence training. Pepper Spray could be the most user friendly and cost - effective technology I can think of to prevent an attack.

Even if we could just get pepper spray given to "At Risk" women against violent ex-partners and call it Hannah's Law (for Hannah Clarke) it might save at least a few lives. Why are women in the United States allowed this option and we aren't?? We could always require background checks before purchase and have each one registered as well to avoid misuse.

If we reach 10,000 signatures we can get a response from the Government and after 100,000 signatures petitions are considered for debate in parliament. Are we happy with the current state of affairs?? If we have success then maybe some vulnerable women and families could be protected in the future!!
