THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA-HON'BLE SHRI NARENDRA MODI

Why this petition matters

WE THE UNDERSIGNED CITIZENS OF INDIA WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT OUR HUMBLE PETITION WITH RECOMMENDATIONS:

Savitri Bai Phule, born on 3rd January 1831, was an Indian social reformer, educationalist, and poet from Maharashtra.  She is regarded as the first female teacher of India.
She was and remains an icon, a feminist champion burning with crackling wrath, truly the mother of Indian Feminism.

Savitribai, together with her husband Jyotirao Phule and with the support of Fatima sheikh started the first school for girls in 1848, determined to improve the situation of women and girls in the country.

Savitribai and Jyotirao founded an education association in 1853, which established other schools in the neighboring villages for girls and women of all classes in Maharashtra.

In 1854, Savitribai founded a home for widows in India, empathizing with their suffering. She opened the ground for the construction of a huge refuge for indigent women, widows, and child brides put aside by their families in 1864, after years of constant reform. She educated all of them.

Jyotirao's concept, Satyashodhak Samaj, The Truthseeker's Society, was shaped in part by Savitribai. The main goals of the Satyashodhak Samaj were to eliminate prejudice and the need for social order. Savitribai established Satyashodhak Marriage in 1873, in which spouses swore an oath of education and equality.

Her efforts were not in vain. In 1852, the British government proclaimed her the finest teacher in the state. In 1853, she was recognized by the British government for her contributions to education.

We therefore, strongly believe that the legacy of Savitribai’s contribution for women’s liberation and emancipation should not go in vain and hence on the 3rd January 2022, on the eve of her 191st birth anniversary, we appeal the Government of India to recognize the efforts of Savitribai Phule and give her tribute by:

● Announcing 3rd January as National Women Teachers Day;

● Putting the work and contribution of Savitribai Phule in the NCERT social sciences textbook;

● Passing a resolution to all the government run educational institutions across the country to place a portrait of Savitribai Phule in the campus;

● Incorporating her writings in the NCERT English and Hindi literature;

● Commemorating her through stamp and recognizing it through UN postal;

● Incorporating of her work on the Ministry of Education’s website;

● Announcing ‘Bhide Wada' the first schools for girls in India as a National Monument.

We look forward to a positive and due action from your good office.

Jai Hind!
